A green steel RFP with high stakes

So, when Spaeter received an RFP from an industry leading manufacturer for green steel, they knew exactly what sourcing partners to turn to. Max Benger, Head of Green Steel, had a plan and called his contacts immediately to put it in motion.

There was a problem though. The buyer wouldn’t just take Spaeter’s word at face value: they wanted third-party validated Product Carbon Footprint quotes to prove that the carbon footprint of the steel — from cradle to customer — would meet the green threshold. The multi-thousand tonne RFP was contingent on a carbon insights partner which both Spaeter and the buyer could trust to be accurate, precise, and on time.

As the deal was nearing close, Max turned to CarbonChain. He needed to generate carbon footprint quotes in a matter of hours, and to provide a credible promise to the buyer that Spaeter could provide full product carbon footprints after delivery. He knew that CarbonChain’s extensive steel asset database, industry expertise, and bulletproof supply chain modelling capabilities made it the best platform for this job.  

Spaeter gave CarbonChain a few basic pieces of information: the steel mills and rollers to be sourced from; the customer’s address; and the route that the steel would take to get there. The resulting carbon footprint quotes validated Max’s thinking that those sourcing partners were right for the job when the emissions estimate came in below the green steel threshold set by the buyer. It also enabled Spaeter to tell their buyer that the analysis was backed by CarbonChain.

The outcome? Spaeter submitted the product carbon footprint quotes with their bid, and received a major portion of the RFP — securing a seven-figure EUR million revenue win.
